Having watched the movie (at an Oracle employees premiere) I can agree and I'm sure so do my fellow Oracle employees.

ReplyDeleteBesides, you display a misunderstanding of the fundamental nature of Time in the comics/movie worlds. For example, Superman appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938, yet he is perennially 30-35(ish) years old due to periodic retconning. As for the current incarnation of Iron Man... why, he's contemporary, of course, having made his first appearance this year in Afghanistan! So let's not hear any stale, outdated criticism about "first appearances"!
You also seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of Iron Man himself. Didn't you even READ that Wikipedia article? Good thing I'm old enough not to have had to. Tony Stark (and I'm talking about his first incarnation) was a weapons dealer, a womanizing playboy, an alcoholic, and a first-class asshole by any measure. He was everything that Bruce Wayne pretended to be, and more. As is stated in the movie he is "clearly not the superhero type". But even an asshole can have redeeming qualities.
That's one of the reasons I was so jazzed to see that he was being played by Robert Downey, Jr.. Downey's personal experiences made him the natural choice for this role.
So go back and read that Wikipedia article, paying close attention to the kind of personality Stan Lee had in mind when he was designing the character. In the future, don't be so quick to say who is or isn't superhero material.
